Coating and wear
A coating, normal wear or tool breakage is usually not a major problem. What matters is whether the tool is truly solid carbide and whether it contains significant steel or other components.
Mixture of different diameters and brands
In manufacturing operations, different diameters, lengths and geometries commonly end up in scrap. You do not need to sort them by brand. For purchasing, it is more important to separate solid carbide, HSS and composite/brazed tools by material.


How to distinguish a solid-carbide tool from HSS
With solid carbide, the whole tool body is made of cemented carbide, whereas HSS is alloyed tool steel. For old mixed stock, it is therefore useful to keep the two groups separate. Surface colour or coating may not reveal the material – the tool substrate is decisive.
Engineering plants often discard not only standard drills and end mills, but also special profile tools, microtools or shortened and broken pieces. If they are solid carbide, they still have material value.
