Brazed turning tools: steel shank + carbide cutting edge
Classic turning tools with a brazed cemented-carbide tip are designed with the carbide cutting part brazed to a steel holder. In practice they exist as roughing, finishing, grooving, threading, internal and other profile variants. For purchasing, it is important that carbide accounts for only part of the total tool weight.

Complete tools do not need to be dismantled in advance
For larger quantities, you do not need to manually separate carbide from the steel shanks. Depending on construction and quantity, we can propose direct purchase of complete tools or technological processing with separation of the carbide fraction.
HSS tools are a different category
All-steel turning tools made of HSS high-speed steel are not purchased as carbide. We can, however, handle them separately in the HSS category. In mixed stocks it is therefore useful to distinguish tools with brazed carbide tips from pure HSS tools.
A brazed tool, an indexable-insert holder and an HSS tool are three different materials
In a classic brazed turning tool, a small carbide block is permanently joined to the steel shank by braze. Modern holders with replaceable inserts are mainly steel and the VBD insert is removed separately. A third group consists of tools made entirely from HSS. For correct purchasing, these constructions should not be confused.
Older stock tools are often colour-marked, oxidized or reground in various ways. This is not a problem in itself. What matters is the presence of a carbide cutting edge and the overall ratio of carbide to steel shank.
Why separation makes sense
The complete tool is mostly steel. After technological separation, a more concentrated carbide output and a separate steel fraction are obtained. For larger quantities, this step can be crucial for efficient further recycling.
Brazed carbide also occurs outside classic turning tools
The same principle – a carbide working part joined to a steel body – is used in various special tools. These pieces are therefore assessed as combined material, not as clean hard scrap.

Do you purchase complete turning tools including the steel shank?
Yes. If they have a brazed carbide cutting edge, we can assess the complete tool and, depending on quantity, offer purchase or processing.
Do I have to de-braze the carbide from the tools myself?
No. For suitable stocks, we can handle separation of the carbide part technologically.
What if the tools are rusty or painted?
Normal corrosion and colour markings are not unusual. The tool construction and amount of carbide matter, not the appearance of the steel shank.
Do you also purchase HSS turning tools?
HSS is a different material from carbide, but selected HSS tools are purchased in a separate category.
